Laser assisted liposuction is the most widely marketed new technique today. The most exciting result may be the increase in collagen formation deep to the skin. Typically liposuction causes skin tightening from new collagen formation extending from the fat to the skin. SmartLipo delivers laser energy that liquefies localized fat deposits, which are then aspirated. Claims of less down time, fewer side effects including less bleeding, swelling and bruising may be born out as more experience is obtained with this technique. In my hands these side effects have never been a significant issue. I am doubtful that the laser will decrease them to a magnitude great enough to warrant charging much more for these procedures. As ultrasonic liposuction has been abandoned by the majority of plastic surgeons, it will be interesting to see the longevity of SmartLipo.
